The three founders of ConnectU (Cameron, Tyler, and Divya) accused Facebook creator, 23 years old Mark Zuckerberg for stealing their idea of creating a social networking website while they were classmates at Harvard University. The charge against Facebook owner also includes fraud, copyright infringement and misappropriation of trade secrets. ConnectU demanded to shut down Facebook and handover the ownership of the company to them. |
In court filings, Facebook’s attorneys said:
“Each of them had different interests and activities. Only one of them had an idea significant enough to build a great company. That one person was Mark Zuckerberg.”
ConnectU originally filed the lawsuit in September 2004 but it was dismissed soon in March 2005. The lawsuit claims that in December 2002, the 3 ConnectU owners began to develop a social networking site for the Harvard community called Harvard Connection. They were planning to finish the project before they graduate in June 2004. But according to the claim, Zuckerberg steal the idea for the Harvard Connection Web site and without informing other three members, he started his new website named “Facebook“.

Can you really copyright “a social connecting website”? Even if he did “steal” the idea off their site, isn’t it fair to say that Zuckerberg was the first to capitalize on it? I dunno.
